Bwahaha! ;-) Very good!… Time to start using [tmbinc: wording change since I'm paranoid] Sony’s support page, if enough of us write maybe they’ll reconsider! I already wrote, how about you?
http://us.playstation.com/support/ask/ (just ignore the “US and Canada only” warning, there just doesn’t seem to be any means of contacting Sony directly on their european pages!)
Also consider the legal ramifications of this, after all Sony *did* advertise Linux-compatibility back when the PS3 was released, so strictly speaking they are now taking away advertised functionality!
What’s more is that all these years Sony saved millions in import tax by declaring the PS3 a “computer” instead of a game console thanks to the Linux-option. So will they have to pay these millions now that they turn all phat PS3s into a “non-computer” overnight with that Firmware update?
P.S: Felix, remember after your Breakpoint Seminar when I asked when you would hack the PS3 and you just replied “Why? Linux already runs on it!”?… Well, maybe it’s time to reconsider now! ;-D
Gibt es denn eine Erklärung dafür, daß Tux jetzt Hausverbot hat?
Word has it the next update will remove the ability to play games, because they’ve already removed everything else.
nille: (you are basically asking “why?”, correct?) People speculate it is because of the memory bus glitch that geohot publicized, although Sony claims it is for security of customers.
I don’t really think the argument that Sony promised Linux functionality upon PS3 release can hold up in court – but I don’t claim to be well versed in law – especially internationally.
But as the saying goes: “the only bad publicity is no publicity”. All of this has really rekindled the homebrew seen, and I am looking forward to it :)
Finally on topic: nice play on their own campaign, tmbinc :)
Thanks, but playing with their campaign wasn’t my idea, it was Erant’s.
the shitheads bend the laws just as they like them to be.we had several law suits with them here in germany due to ps2 modchips and explained to the court in detail all the features that a modchip added to the ps2 which are now native in ps3. especially the importgaming. sony said that back in times of the ps2 there was no need for importgaming but today there is need for it. and the fuckinjudges said to sony “true – true”. no matter what sony said and lied… judges said “true”. so i am sure sony wont have to pay a dime back in taxes after removing linux. they will just explain some hairy bulshit and the judges will say “true”… We’re living in a time where the industry is making the laws…
