This is actually very important in some parts of the world where the water supply comes near-exclusively from desalination plants. It’s typical of small islands. Desalination is an extremely expensive process in terms of energy, and that energy tends to come from extremely expensive refined fossil fuels (since you can’t fit a refinery in a touristic island). The Netherlands Antilles are good examples of this; in fact, Aruba has the world’s most expensive gasoline, and all their water comes from a desalination plant. Their electrical power generation is based on fuel oil and natural gas, so its cost is likely in proportion to that of gasoline.
